I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank our soon-to-be-former President, George Walker Bush.  Without your brilliant ineptitude, war-mongering, or idiot-savant-style babbling, the American public may never have been so overwhelmingly spurred into action to rise up as one and elect Barack Obama.

The seeds of this change were laid at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, when President-Elect Obama was first seen on a National Stage.  His speech about uniting America moved so many, and we all watched his blossoming Senatorial career anxiously, waiting to see when, not if, he would run for your office.  It was only because of your actions from 2001 to that day, that Mr. Obama could even have the ability to call for a change - to bring the Red States and Blue States together as the United States.

Though I initially supported soon-to-be Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, I choose to follow Mr. Obama's idea of unity, once he was declared the candidate of my Party.  With each speech, each debate, and with further research on my own of his policy ideas, I became a devoted convert.  Never before in my life had I felt such excitement, such hope, about the possible direction this country would take under his leadership.  For so long, I used to envy those who got to hear the speeches of John F. Kennedy first hand, for those who lived and witnessed his Presidency - and now, here I had my own JFK to inspire and lead me into action in a way I've never aspired to before.

On Election Night, I, along with the rest of the country waited with baited breath as the returns came in.  Though we were hopeful, we knew the taste of the defeat too well, and would not take any projections for granted.  When it was overwhelmingly clear that the country had chosen Barack Obama to lead us, the tears flowed freely - with joy, rather than the sorrow and anger I had in the 8 years since your "election".  A weight was lifted off my shoulders, the bitterness dissipated, and a light filled my heart.  I appreciate the victory not only for it's historical significance, but for what We The People proved that night - that in unity, anything is possible.

President Bush, you were elected upon the promise of being a "Uniter and not a Divider", well Sir, by going against  your word, and being such a divisive "leader", you were finally able to fulfill your promise and united this country in action against your Party - to give us the hope and change we so desperately need.  For that, I thank you.

Good luck to you, Sir, for history will not be so kind.

Dixville Notch has spoken: It's Obama in a landslide

DIXVILLE NOTCH, New Hampshire (CNN) -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama emerged victorious in the first election returns of the 2008 presidential race, winning 15 of 21 votes cast in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.

People in the village in New Hampshire's northeast corner voted just after midnight Tuesday.

It was the first time since 1968 that the village leaned Democratic in an election.

Obama's rival, Republican John McCain, won 6 votes.

A full 100 percent of registered voters in the village cast ballots. And the votes didn't take long to tally.

The town, home to around 75 residents, has opened its polls shortly after midnight each Election Day since 1960, drawing national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.

However, since 1996, another small New Hampshire town -- Hart's Location -- reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also began opening its polls at midnight.

The result in Dixville Notch is hardly a reliable bellwether for the
eventual winner of the White House -- or even the result statewide.

While New Hampshire is a perennial swing state, with 4 Electoral College votes at stake, Dixville Notch consistently leans Republican. The last Democrat it picked was Hubert Humphrey over Richard Nixon in 1968.

President Bush won the town in a landslide in the past two elections: He captured 73 percent of the vote in 2004 (19 residents picked Bush while six preferred Sen. John Kerry), and secured 80 percent of the vote in 2000 (21 votes for Bush, five votes for Al Gore.)

But villagers expected the results to be close this year given Democrats now outnumber Republicans there.

The town picked both John McCain and Barack Obama for the New Hampshire Democratic and Republican primaries in January. McCain ultimately won the state of New Hampshire, while Sen. Hillary Clinton upset Obama there.
