My friend, WendyZ, has inspired me to think about checking out some books on CD. I never thought of listening to books while on my commute each day, but it sounds like a wonderful way to pass the time. I read plenty of books in my spare time, but most of those consist of "chick-lit" reads. I would really like to delve back into the classics-you know, those books we were required to read in school? Or even some other really great, fascinating book.
So, my question to you is this: what classics do you remember actually enjoying? Or is there a non-fiction or biography I should check out? I dropped out of high school in the beginning of my junior year, so I missed out on things like "Beowulf", and most of the stories in my college freshman lit book were condensed, so I couldn't get the full experience.
I also have another ulterior motive for wanting new reads: we're cutting back on our cable starting in June. I'm paying $160.00/month right now for cable, internet, and phone, and quite frankly it's getting outrageous. We're going to cut off the phone (we have cell phones), switch to a lower amount of bandwith for the internet, and only have the basic channels for cable (good-bye HBO!!!!). We're going to take the money we save and apply it to our credit card debt. I'm also on a self-imposed shopping hiatus. I've been spending waaaayyyy too much money, and I've got to stop before it gets out of control. It's so tempting to pick up a cute shirt, skirt, or anything else on sale, but I don't need half of the stuff I buy.
We're planning on spending more time out of doors this summer, renting t.v. series on Netflix, and of course, reading (especially HP7 on 7/21!!). Hopefully, it all pays off in the end.
I'm looking forward to your suggestions!
